Best pizza place in every state – 24/7 Wall St.

If you love pizza, you’re not alone. A few years ago, at the request of the California Pizza Kitchen chain, the Harris Poll conducted a survey of attitudes toward pizza among more than 2,000 American adults. The study found that, if they could only eat one food for the rest of their lives, 21% of participants would choose pizza – more than any other food by far.

About three billion pizzas are sold in America each year, and we consume an average of 23 pounds (or 46 slices) per capita per year. Much of it, of course, comes frozen from the supermarket or is delivered (or picked up) by one of the big multi-unit pizza suppliers, like Domino’s or Pizza Hut or a slightly smaller local chain. Some of the latter operations do a very good job.

In all, there are approximately 77,000 pizzerias and specialty pizza restaurants in America. This includes chains large and small, but also a large number of individual establishments or operations with only a handful of outposts. (These are the US cities with the most pizzerias.)

To compile a list of the best pizzerias in each state, 24/7 Tempo consulted and extrapolated from lists, ratings and reviews from websites including The daily meal, Eater, Food & Wine, Initiated, Reader’s Digest, PBS, far and wide, Mashed, Thrillistand Yelpas well as numerous local and regional sites.

There are many different styles of pizza across the country. One estimate mentions as many as 24 – although probably only 10 or 12 are common, among them Neapolitan, Sicilian, Deep Dish, New York Style, Detroit Style and New Haven Style (named after the metropolis of Connecticut that some consider to be the pizza capital of the country).

The pizza places on our list represent many possible styles, and some serve several different styles to appeal to a wide range of customers. Some of these establishments go wild with non-traditional toppings (corn, kale, barbecue sauce), while others specialize in simple cheese pizzas or pies with just a few toppings.

According to another Harris poll, this one ordered last year by Hormel, the most popular of these additions in the United States is the small, lightly spiced salami-like sausage called pepperoni, which topped the second most popular, sausage, from 38% to 15%.

Most pizzerias on this list also serve other Italian dishes, from paninis to pastas to full-fledged entrees, but pizza is their top priority. Reflecting current food preferences in the United States, it can also be noted that many of these places offer gluten-free crusts and/or vegan cheese and sometimes even vegan pepperoni.
