Hartford Hawks Athletics – Volleyball falls in four sets against Dartmouth

WEST HARTFORD, Connecticut – Junior Maddie lindsay and first year student Camryn Luginbuhl combined for 28 kills to lead the Hartford volleyball team, but that wasn’t enough as the Hawks fell to league foe Ivy Dartmouth in four sets on Hartford’s matchday two Hawks Invitational inside the Hartford Volleyball Gym Friday night.

The Hawks fell to 2-9 in the season with the loss, while the Big Green improved to 7-1 in the 2021 campaign.

DARTMOUTH 3, HARTFORD 1 (25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-12)

SET ONE: The two teams traded in a tie 7-7 before the Big Green scored three straight points to take a 10-7 lead, forcing a timeout for Hartford. Out of the timeout, Hartford went on an 8-3 streak to take a 15-13 lead in the set. However, Dartmouth responded with a 5-0 streak to take an 18-15 lead in the set. Hartford reduced the deficit to 18-17 before Dartmouth counterattacked with three straight runs to force a time out for the Hawks. However, the deficit turned out to be too large as the Big Green won the set 25-19.

SET TWO: Dartmouth took a 5-2 lead early in the set, forcing a time out at Hartford. Out of the timeout, the Big Green built their lead to 15-8 to force a second timeout in Hartford. Dartmouth did not ease off during the timeout, hanging on for the 25-17 victory.

SET THREE: The two teams traded points for a 7-7 tie before the Hawks got three straight points to take a 10-7 lead in the set. However, the Big Green came back with an 8-3 run to take a 15-13 lead to force a time out at Hartford. Out of the timeout, Hartford rallied to tie the set at 16-16. The two teams played tied 19-19 in the set before Dartmouth called a time out. Out of the waiting period, Maddie lindsay scored back-to-back wins and an attacking error from Dartmouth gave Hartford a three-point lead to force a timeout by the Big Green. Outside the timeout, Dartmouth reduced the Hawks’ lead to 23-22, forcing Hartford to use his last timeout of the set. Leading 24-23, second year Uzezi Ijoma sealed the whole with a kill.

SET FOUR: The Big Green picked up the momentum, taking a 5-1 lead to force a time out at Hartford. Dartmouth increased their lead to 12-4 before the Hawks used their final timeout. The deficit turned out to be too large to close as the Hawks ultimately lost the set 25-12.

HARTFORD NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS: Lindsay led the way with 16 kills, a team-high… Luginbuhl added 12 kills and eight digs… senior Alex Lucero contributed 21 digs, a high point in the team… in second year Morgan galligan compiled a record 37 assists… Ellie Blain collected a record 18 assists for the Big Green.

The Hartford team will be back in action on Saturday, September 18, when they wrap up their game at the Hartford Hawks Invitational with a game against Brown. Hartford Volleyball Gym’s first service is set for 7 p.m.
