Locals make their mark in Orange County Championship races

After new organizers stepped forward to save the Orange County Championships cross-country meet earlier this year, the county’s battle for running supremacy was once again fought.

Holly Barker, of Laguna Hills High School, finished first in the girls’ draw race in 17 minutes 14.7 seconds on Saturday at Oak Canyon Park, becoming the first rookie to win the race since 1995.

Barker is also the first Laguna Hills girl to win the raffle race, and she is the second Hawk to win as an individual, joining Laguna Hills coach Chris Lynch, who accomplished the feat in 1991. .

Lynch said he was out of state when he was first told about Barker by one of the school’s football coaches who saw her running around the track.

“You’re always skeptical when you hear, ‘Oh, that kid is the next best thing,’” Lynch said of Barker, who has yet to be beaten in a race this season. “You are still skeptical. Looking at her, she looks like a sixth grader, but this kid can run. She just has an engine.

Canyon edged JSerra 35-36 for the women’s team title. The Comanches placed four riders in the top 10 with Emma Hadley (second, 17: 48.1), Isabella Frisone (fourth, 18: 09.7), Makena Oliva (seventh, 18: 20.7) and Keira Potter ( 10th, 18:31, 8).

Jai Dawson ran 15:07.1 to claim another individual victory for powerful Dana Hills County powerhouse in the boys’ draw. San Clemente led Capistrano Valley 50-93 for the boys’ tag team championship.

Local highlights followed on Saturday morning, with two locals delivering second-place performances in the Division 2 varsity races (major schools).

Edison’s Wylie Cleugh was excited about his second place (16: 04.2) on the boys’ side. He said he was aiming for a top-three ranking, rather than a time, with the competition ushering in a new course.

“OC Champs is a great competition because everyone is here in Orange County,” said Cleugh. “You can really see who’s the best, and that’s awesome. “

After competing in a number of grade-level races to start the year, Newport Harbor sophomore Emma Scheumann (second, 19: 15.6) has fun running with her teammates and shows the scores again of the team. The sailors finished second behind Aliso Niguel 68-89 in the Division 2 varsity race for girls.

“It was just good that we had a team to at least count for points because we have seven [runners] now, ”said Scheumann.

The Division 3 varsity races (small schools) were held on Friday. The locals did well there too.

Corona del Mar was second behind Brea Olinda 42-83 in girls, Melisse Djomby-Enyawe (second, 18: 28.5) leading the Sea Kings.

Elizabeth King of Ocean View (ninth, 19: 27.5) gave the region two top 10 runners in this competition.

Edward Rodriguez of Costa Mesa (fourth, 16: 22.9) was a local star for the boys on Friday.

El Toro coach Ken Chai, who co-managed the meeting with Mission Viejo coach Rob Belo, said former meet director Matt Bell, the Unified School District athletic coordinator of Saddleback Valley Brent Dohling, Trabuco Hills coach Dennis Kelly and Lynch also played a key role in helping put the game together.

“There are too many people to thank,” said Chai. “I’m just glad we were able to save him.”
