Six Orange County Players Selected for California High School Football Hall of Fame – Orange County Register


Six players from Orange County are part of the inaugural class of the California High School Football Hall of Fame.

The Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation announced Monday the group of 100 players and 13 Hall of Famers who will be added to Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

The Orange County players selected are Mater Dei quarterback John Huarte, Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley, running back Tustin DeShaun Foster, Huntington Beach tight end Tony Gonzalez, quarterback Mater Dei guard Matt Leinart and Santa Margarita quarterback Carson Palmer.

Former Orange County head coaches selected are Marijon Ancich, who coached at Tustin but is best known for coaching at St. Paul, John Barnes of Los Alamitos, Bob Johnson of El Toro and Mission Viejo and Harry Welch of St. Margarita and Santa Margarita. Welch coached for many years at Canyon of Canyon Country.

Coaches had to be retired to be considered.

The California Football Hall of Fame is set to open during the week of the CIF Southern Division Division 1 Championship game to be played at the Rose Bowl on November 25.

Hall of Fame inductees include 100 players and 13 coaches. This year is the Rose Bowl Stadium’s 100th. Players and coaches will be added in future years.
