South Hills Student News for the week of January 26, 2022


On December 4 and 5, Michel Quallich, a seventh-grade student at Baldwin Middle School, competed in the Hurricane Tour National Championship as a representative of Pittsburgh’s First Tee program. The event was held at Orange County’s Panther Lake course in Orlando, Florida. Quallich played in a group of over 100 players between the ages of 11 and 13 from around the world. He managed to card rounds of 75 and 70, taking fourth place and a +1 score for the tournament. Over the two rounds he hit 25 fairways, 30 greens in regulation and a total of 66 putts.

Nicholas Altavilla and Nicolas Depretis have been named to the Dean’s List for the 2021 Summer Term at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Erin Henleywho is in the Bachelor of Science Psychology: Forensic Program at Mansfield University, has been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2021 semester.

Megan Diggans, Kaylia Pham, Zachary Smith, Alexis Wagner, Magdalene White and Nathalie Zgurich have been named to Thiel College’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2021 semester.

Noah Piercewho is majoring in accounting at Coastal Carolina University, was named to the president’s slate for the fall 2021 semester. Taylor Szuhoza graduated from Costal Carolina in the summer of 2021 with a degree in political science.

Isabelle Boehm was a member of the production team for the Albright College Theater production of “Sensitive Guys” in November. Boehm served as dresser for the production, performed at the Wachovia Theater. A graduate of Baldwin Senior High School, Boehm majored in fashion/costume design at Albright.

Pleasant Hills Middle School was again named a Pennsylvania Donald Eichhorn “School to Watch” under a recognition program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. The Schools to Watch program recognizes schools that achieve academic excellence based on rigorous criteria established by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform.

Pleasant Hills Middle School joins a select group of 36 active STW schools in Pennsylvania and approximately 700 across the country. Pleasant Hills Middle School was originally designated as a school to watch in 2014 and was renamed in 2017.

Pleasant Hills Middle School will be recognized at the Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education State Conference at State College on February 27. The school will be recognized along with all other nationally recognized STW schools June 23-25, 2022, at the National Forum’s National Conference of Schools to Watch in Washington, D.C.
