The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is back in Hartford County

HARTFORD, Connecticut – A tradition returns to the streets of Hartford on March 12. She’s been away since 2019, but Greater Hartford’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is back. And less than two weeks before the march, excitement is already on the minds of those behind the parade.

“It’s really moving, the parade is on!” said Liz Saunders, general chair of the Central Connecticut Celtic Cultural Committee (CCCCC). Saunders is also honored as the 2022 Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal.

“I can’t wait to see the thousands of people line the streets of Hartford,” Saunders said, “Showing our culture, our spirit and bringing the streets of Hartford back to life.”

The West Hartford Parade contingency is also excited about the parade, which will recognize 50 years in 2022. Officially, 2021 was the parade’s 50th anniversary, but COVID-19 canceled the festivities, so parade organizers are celebrating this milestone this year.

John Staunton is on the West Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee; it’s a parade her father helped start.

“It (the parade) runs in the family, we’re entering our fourth generation with our kids, so they’re excited,” Staunton said.

The 2022 Greater Hartford Parade honors Jeff Flaks, President and CEO of Hartford HealthCare, as “Person of the Year.” From his office in downtown Hartford, Flaks said he would march on behalf of all frontline workers who have dedicated so much energy since the pandemic began.

“In many ways, I accept that for all the people who have worked on the front lines of health care,” Flaks said. “We have seen such heroic acts and on this day (March 12) we will celebrate health care and community, and we will celebrate 50 years of this parade which is an incredible tradition.

The Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade will air live on the CW20 on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m.
