Two transfer quarterbacks create interesting competition for Tesoro – Orange County Register

The arrival of two transfer quarterbacks at Tesoro High set up an intriguing competition between reunited teammates.

Juniors Gavin Shaigineik (6-0, 160) and Evan Pierce (6-1, 180) both recently transferred to the South Coast League school in Santa Margarita.

Tesoro’s football coach Matt Poston said on Wednesday (July 14th) that the two were the Titans’ main contenders for the post.

Shaigineik recently made the switch after playing for Santa Margarita in the South County Pass Tournament at Mission Viejo on Saturday July 10. He split his time with Jaxon Potter, a transfer from JSerra, in a loss to future champion Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals.

Shaigineik also helped Santa Margarita win the Edison’s Battle at the Beach 7v7 tournament for the first time on July 3. He recently received offers from the State of Florida and Charlotte.

Pierce transferred to Tesoro last month after two years in Santa Margarita. He joined the freshman team in 2019.

Shaigineik and Pierce didn’t just attend Santa Margarita last year, they were once teammates with the Colts 4 Vert, a young passer team associated with San Juan Hills.

Tesoro finished 3-2 overall, 1-2 on the South Coast in the spring.

LOS ALAMITOS RECRUITS A QUARTERBACK GURU

Los Alamitos have hired quarterback guru Danny Hernandez as an assistant coach, Griffins coach Ray Fenton has confirmed. Hernandez, unsurprisingly, will coach quarterbacks for the Griffins, a group led by highly recruiting junior Malachi Nelson.

Fenton’s son TJ, also a former quarterback, is the team’s offensive coordinator.

Hernandez has worked with several high-level high school quarterbacks in recent years, including former Mater Dei star Bryce Young, now in Alabama.

SATURDAY MARINA TOURNAMENT

San Clemente, San Juan Hills, Capistrano Valley, Corona del Mar, Cypress and Pacifica are among the teams heading to Marina’s Surf City Challenge pass tournament on Saturday. Long Beach Poly and Centennial Corona are among the top non-county teams.

Centennial Corona finished second behind Mater Dei last week at the Brave 8 Invitational in St. John Bosco.
